Karger
A Riesa, in Sassonia, ex polo siderurgico della Germania dell’est, vive Karger, operaio trentenne che sta attraversando il periodo più difficile della sua vita. Divorziato dall’unica donna che ha amato fin dai tempi della scuola, separato dalla figlia, a rischio di licenziamento per lo smantellamento dell’impianto in cui lavora, Karger cerca di raccogliere i cocci della sua vita con distacco e disarmante stoicismo. La relazione con una coetanea sembra offrirgli un po’ di conforto, ma non lo aiuta a destarsi da quel torpore che ha sempre allontanato e irritato le persone che gli sono state accanto. Disilluso e stanco, Karger decide infine di lasciare per la prima volta la sua città per andare a cercare altrove un suo posto nel mondo.
"Un uomo al centro della scena, un corpo nello spazio dell’inquadratura. Non c’è troppa storia, solo tante situazioni, perché la Storia vera, quella con la maiuscola, è già successa: nella Sassonia che fu un tempo della DDR il fallimento del socialismo reale ha lasciato un paesaggio industriale in via di smantellamento, fabbriche che chiudono e famiglie che si sfasciano. Gli uomini e le donne che furono giovani negli ultimi anni del regime – «li riconosci dall’età e dall’immancabile giubbotto di jeans», dice la regista – sono ormai invecchiati e non si ritrovano più. Karger è uno di loro, un sopravvissuto che cerca di riprendersi la vita che non gli è mai appartenuta. Il film è suo e la vita, forse, potrà tornare ad esserlo". rm
Karger
Karger, a thirty-year-old ironworker who’s going through the most difficult times in his life, lives in Riesa, Saxony, which was an important iron and steel centre of Eastern Germany. Divorced from the only woman he ever loved since his school years, apart from his daughter, and risking to be fired because of the dismantlement of the plant he works in, Karger tries to pick up the pieces of his life with detachment and disarming stoicism. A relationship with a thirty-year-old woman seems to give some comfort to him, but it doesn’t help him to wake up from that lethargy which has always separated and bothered the people living next to him. Disenchanted and tired, Karger finally decides for the first time to leave his town to seek somewhere else for his place in the world.
"A man stands in the center of the scene, a body framed in the shot. There isn’t much to his story, just lots of situations, because History, with a capital H, has already taken place. In Saxony, which was once part of East Germany, the failure of real socialism has left an industrial landscape in a state of dismantlement, factories that close and families that disintegrate. The men and women who were young during the last years of the regime – “you can recognize them by their age and by their regulation jeans jacket,” says the director – have aged and feel out of place. Karger is one of them, a survivor who tries to recover a life that never belonged to him. The film is his and life, maybe, might become his once again as well." rm

Elke Hauck
Elke Hauck (Riesa, Germania, 1967), dopo aver lavorato in una legatoria di libri, ha frequentato i corsi serali dell’Accademia di Belle Arti di Dresda e frequentato lezioni di letteratura tedesca e storia dell’arte a Lipsia e Versailles. Nel 1993 si è trasferita a Berlino, dove ha cominciato a lavorare nel cinema come assistente alla regia, alla produzione e montatrice e dove, nel 2002, ha completato gli studi presso l’Accademia Tedesca di Cinema e Televisione. Dopo aver diretto due documentari, ha realizzato con Karger il suo primo lungometraggio di finzione, ottenendo una nomination al premio Lola, gli Oscar tedeschi, per la miglior sceneggiatura.
Elke Hauck (Riesa, Germany, 1967) trained as a bookbinder. She then attended evening courses at the Dresden Academy of Arts and also enrolled for lectures in German studies and fine-art history in Leipzig and Versailles. She moved to Berlin in 1993 where she worked as a camera assistant, editor and production assistant. In 2002 she completed her studies at the German Film and Television Academy. After directing two documentaries, she realized Karger, her first feature film, which was nominated for the Lola national award for best screenplay.
