Non posso vivere senza te
A Kaohsiung, sull’isola di Taiwan, il disoccupato Wu-Hsiung Li mantiene sé e la figlia lavorando occasionalmente come sommozzatore. La bambina, avuta da una donna poi fuggita dopo il parto, ha ormai l’età per andare a scuola e desiderando per lei l’educazione che non ha mai avuto, Wu-Hsiung Li si reca agli uffici dell’anagrafe per metterla in regola con la legge. Qui, però, scopre con orrore di non avere alcun diritto legale sulla figlia: la madre, infatti, al momento del concepimento era sposata con un altro uomo e la paternità della bambina non è certa. Disperato, Wu-Hsiung Li fa di tutto per affermare i suoi diritti di padre, ma quando la polizia arriva per portargli via la figlia, minaccia di compiere un gesto estremo.

Sarebbe legittimo chiedersi perché un film taiwanese abbia un titolo spagnolo. E a dire la verità, dopo aver guardato il secondo lungometraggio di Leon Dai, la cosa continua a non avere senso. Il mistero resta intatto. Eppure il titolo dice tutto: “Non posso vivere senza te”. Questo dramma familiare appassionante e commovente parla dell’amore assoluto e incondizionato di un padre per la sua figlioletta e di come tenti ogni strada pur di non perderla. Leon Dai racconta questa storia di lotta per la sopravvivenza con intensa sensibilità e umana dignità. Il Festival celebra il melodramma con un omaggio a John M. Stahl, ma c’è un che di confortante nel vedere come il genere si stia rivitalizzando lontano da Hollywood, nelle zone malfamate del porto di Kaohsiung. md

In Kaohsiung, Taiwan, unemployed Wu-Hsiung supports himself and his daughter occasionally working as diver. The girl, born from a woman who left soon after the childbirth, is now old enough to go to school. Wanting for her the education he never had, Wu-Hsiung goes to the register office to legalize her situation. Here, he finds he has no rights to his daughter: when she was conceived, her mother was actually married to somebody else, and the girl’s paternity is uncertain. In despair, Wu-Hsiung tries whatever he can to assert his rights, but when the police comes to take his daughter away, he threatens to carry out an extreme action.

One may legitimately wonder why a Taiwanese film has a sentence in Spanish for a title. And to tell the truth, after watching Leon Dai’s sophomore feature, it still doesn’t make any sense. The mystery remains intact. Yet the title says it all: “I cannot live without you”. This thrilling and heart-rending family drama is about the unconditional and absolute love of a father for his cute little daughter… and how he uses all means possible not to lose her. Leon Dai tells this struggle-for-life story with intense sensitivity and human dignity. Whereas we celebrate melodrama through our tribute to John M. Stahl, there’s something cheering to see how the genre revitalizes itself far from Hollywood in the seedy areas of the Kaohsiung harbour. md
