Un omaggio a Joe Strummer, storico leader dei Clash scomparso nel 2002, realizzato da Julian Temple (da sempre autore vicino al movimento punk e alla musica pop) attingendo a un vastissimo repertorio di materiali d’archivio, interviste, fotografie, registrazioni audio, disegni animati e filmati girati da lui stesso a partire dal 1976. Ne emerge il ritratto complesso, malinconico, commosso, di una delle più grandi rockstar di sempre, un artista vagabondo e inquieto, talvolta anche contraddittorio, che in tanti sono chiamati a ricordare: dagli ex compagni dei Clash (ma non Mick Jones, presente solo nelle riprese d’archivio) a Mick Jagger, da Bono a Martin Scorsese, da Jim Jarmusch a Johnny Depp, da John Cusack a Joe Ely.

tribute to Joe Strummer, the famous leader of the Clash, who died in 2002. Julian Temple (an usual director of punk movement and pop music) has based his film on a vast repertory of archive material, interviews, photographs, audio recordings, animated drawings and films he himself shot starting in 1976. The result is a complex, sad, touched portrait of one of the greatest rock stars ever, a restless, vagabond, sometimes contradicting, artist who relives in the memories of many people: from the former Clash (except Mick Jones) to Mick Jagger, from Bono to Martin Scorsese, from Jim Jarmusch to Johnny Depp, from John Cusack to Joe Ely.

Julien Temple (Londra, 1953), dopo aver scoperto il cinema con i film di Jean Vigo, abbandona gli studi di storia e architettura per iscriversi alla National Film and Television School, dove si diploma in regia nel 1975. Coinvolto nella scena punk, esordisce con il cortometraggio Sex Pistols Number 1(1977), al quale segue il lungometraggio documentario The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle - La grande truffa del R & R (1980), dedicato ancora ai Sex Pistols. Diventato uno dei più celebri registi di videoclip (con artisti come David Bowie, Tom Petty, i Blur), si è cimentato anche con la finzione – Le ragazze della terra sono facili (1988), Vigo, passione per la vita (1998) – e ha continuato a realizzare documentari d’argomento musicale.
Julian Temple (London, 1953) discovered cinema through the films by Jean Vigo. He abandoned his studies of history and architecture and enrolled at the National Film and Television School, graduating in directing in 1975. He became involved in the punk scene and debuted with the short film Sex Pistols Number 1 (1977), which was followed by the feature-length documentary The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle (1980), always about the Sex Pistols. He became one of the most famous directors of video clips (for artists like David Bowie, Tom Petty, the Blur), has also tried his hand at fiction – Earth Girls Are Easy (1988), Vigo (1998), – and continues to make documentaries about music.
