I fratelli Son, Boy e Kid Hayes vivono insieme in una piccola comunità rurale dell’Arkansas. Allevati dalla madre dopo che il padre li abbandonò quando ancora erano bambini, sono cresciuti portando nel cuore un profondo rancore verso l’uomo che fuggì da loro per formare altrove una nuova famiglia. Quando giunge la notizie della sua morte, i tre fratelli si presentano al funerale e insultano pesantemente la sua memoria di fronte ai tre figli di secondo letto. L’affronto scatena una violenta faida tra le due famiglie del defunto che porterà i sei «fratelli» a vendicarsi reciprocamente e a fare i conti ciascuno con i traumi di un passato mai del tutto superato.
"Campi di grano, tramonti, distese lacustri, strade impolverate. Il Midwest degli orizzonti infiniti è lo sfondo naturale di questa storia di vendette incrociate che sembra ricalcare archetipi biblici. Sei fratelli, tre da una parte e tre dall’altra, e un solo padre: la metafora è chiara e riporta allo scontro di civiltà e religioni che dilania questo millennio. A compensare il simbolismo, il realismo secco della messinscena, il rumore degli spari e delle botte, il gonfiore delle cicatrici, il frastuono silenzioso della morte, del rancore, della ferita che mai si rimargina. Shotgun Stories
The Hayes brothers, Son, Boy, and Kid, live together in a small rural community in Arkansas. Brought up by their mother after their father abandoned them when they were just little children, they grew up bearing in their hearts a deep grudge against the man who fled from them and started a new family somewhere else. When they learn he is dead, the three brothers show up at the funeral to badly insult their father’s memory in the face of the three sons of the second marriage. The slight triggers off a feud between the two families of the deceased, which will lead the six “brothers” to take vengeance upon one another and to reckon with the trauma of a past which they didn’t completely overcome.
“Fields of grain, sunsets, endless lakes, dusty roads. The Midwest, with its infinite horizons, is the natural background to this story of intersecting vendettas that seems to copy Biblical archetypes. Six brothers - three on one side and three on the other - and just one father: the metaphor is clear and harks back to the clash of civilizations and religions that lacerates this millennium. The dry realism of the mise-en-scene seems to compensate the symbolism, the sound of the shots and the punches, the swollen scars, the silent uproar of death, the animosity, the wounds that will never heal. We are in the badlands of Terence Malick, with the same despondence for an America that kills its own children in the name of a meaningless battle.” (Roberto Manassero)

Jeff Nichols
Jeff Nichols (Little Rock, Arkansas, USA, 1978) si è laureato in cinema presso la North Carolina School of the Arts nel 2001. Prima di esordire nel lungometraggio con Shotgun Stories, ha scritto e diretto sei cortometraggi e dopo la laurea ha lavorato per The Rough South of Larry Brown di Gary Hawkins e Be Here to Love Me, A Film About Townes Van Zandt di Margaret Brown. Attualmente vive e lavora ad Austin, in Texas.
Jeff Nichols (Little Rock, Arkansas, USA, 1978) graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts, School of Filmmaking in 2001. In addition to Shotgun Stories, his feature directorial debut, he has written and directed six short films. Since graduating, Nichols has worked on several feature films including Gary Hawkins’s The Rough South of Larry Brown and Margaret Brown’s Be Here to Love Me, A Film About Townes Van Zandt. Nichols currently lives and works in Austin, Texas.
