Dopo alcuni anni passati a New York, Kelly «la bruna», a quasi trent’anni e con i capelli tinti di biondo, ritorna nella sua città della belga provincia per ritrovare i suoi vecchi amici: Frederic, fidanzato con una ragazza benestante e in procinto di trasferirsi a Bruxelles, Kurt, il suo ex ora sposato con Kelly «la bionda» e padre di un bambino, e Nick, ancora gestore del locale in cui erano soliti riunirsi. In onore dell’amica, ciascuno fa del proprio meglio per ricreare l’atmosfera di un tempo, ma nel frattempo troppe cose sono cambiate: un ragazzo del gruppo si è suicidato e per tutti la vita non sta andando come sperato. E quando Kurt abbandona improvvisamente la moglie e il figlio, Frederic e Nick partono per andare a cercarlo.
"C’è un personaggio che tutti chiamano «la bruna», ma che in realtà ha i capelli tinti di biondo. Sono passati anni da quando se n’è andata, e ora che ritorna è come una figlia prodiga che arriva per far capire quanto le cose siano cambiate. Per i vecchi amici continuare a chiamarla «la bruna» è un modo per restare ancorati al passato condiviso, ma nel frattempo i capelli sono diventati biondi, la giovinezza si è trasfigurata in età adulta e rimanere in piedi fino a tardi non ha più il sapore di una volta. Oltre gli sguardi, i sogni e le delusioni c’è la consapevolezza del fallimento, la presenza invisibile dell’amico suicida: una via di fuga estrema che forse si può ancora evitare rifugiandosi nei luoghi della fantasia". With Friends Like These
After spending a few years in New York, “the black” Kelly, who is almost thirty and has dyed her hair blond, returns to her hometown in rural Belgium and to her old friends: Frederic, who is engaged to a wealthy girl and is about to move to Brussels; Kurt, her ex, who is now married to “the blonde” Kelly and has a child; and Nick, who still runs the bar where they used to all meet up. To celebrate their friend’s homecoming, each one does their best to recreate the old atmosphere, but too many things have changed in the meantime. One fellow who was part of the group has committed suicide and life isn’t going the way any of them had hoped. When Kurt suddenly leaves his wife and son, Frederic and Nick go off in search of him.
"There’s a person everybody calls “the brunette,” but actually she has dyed her hair blond. It’s been a few years since she went away, but now she’s back and it’s like a prodigal daughter returning to show just how much things have changed. To her old friends, continuing to call her “the brunette” is a way to stay anchored to their shared past. But in the meantime her hair has become blond, her youth has been transformed into adulthood and staying up late isn’t as much fun it used to be. Beyond the looks, the dreams and the disappointments, there’s an awareness of failure, the invisible presence of a friend who committed suicide: an extreme method of escape that might still be avoided by taking refuge in their imaginary places." Felix van Groeninge
Felix van Groeningen (Ghent, Belgio, 1977) si è laureato nel 2000 presso il KASK, l’Accademia reale di belle arti di Ghent, e ha poi cominciato a lavorare nel collettivo teatrale Kung Fu, con il quale è andato in tour in diversi europei. Dopo avere diretto diversi cortometraggi, performance artistiche e video musicali, nel 2004 ha diretto il suo primo lungometraggio, Steve + Sky, che ha vinto il premio Joseph Plateau per il Miglior film belga. Dagen zonder lief è la sua opera seconda.
Felix van Groeningen (Ghent, Belgium, 1977) in 2000 graduated from KASK, Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. He has traveled with the theatre collective Kung Fu all along Europe and he has realized some shorts, artistic performances and videoclips. In 2004 he made his feature début with Steve + Sky, which brought him the Joseph Plateau Award for Best Belgian Film. Dagen zonder lief is his second feature.
