Il quarantenne tedesco Hans giunge in un villaggio sull’isola di Maiorca per lavorare come tuttofare in una grande villa. L’uomo viene a sostituire un connazionale che portava il suo stesso nome e che è scomparso dall’isola senza lasciare traccia. Timido, insicuro e senza troppa personalità, nonostante gli sforzi Hans non riesce con la sua presenza a cancellare dalla mente degli abitanti del luogo il ricordo dell’uomo che l’ha preceduto. Così, quando finalmente scopre il mistero legato alla sua scomparsa, tiene per sé il segreto e, completamente calato nei panni dell’altro Hans, sceglie di cancellare la propria incerta identità per acquisirne una più salda e veritiera.
"Io, ovvero, la mia figura, il mio volto, la mia voce, la mia presenza nel mondo. L’identità di un individuo è racchiusa in una parola di due lettere che nella sua elementarità racchiude la complessità dell’esistere: ciascun uomo esiste se può dichiarare di esserci, di possedere un nome, di riconoscersi in un pronome personale. Hans, il protagonista di questo mystery thriller metafisico, è l’uomo senza personalità che nessuno ricorda e ciascuno confonde; persino il suo nome non riesce a distinguerlo nel mondo, perché colui che l’ha preceduto ha saputo indossarlo meglio di quanto lui potrà mai fare. Yo
Hans, a forty-year-old German, comes to a village in the island of Majorca to work as a handyman in a big villa. He is in Majorca to replace another German, named Hans too, who disappeared from the island without a trace. Shy, insecure, and lacking in personality, despite of his efforts Hans can’t blot out from locals’ minds the memory of the man who came before him. When, finally, he discovers the mystery of his disappearance, he keeps secret the truth, and, definitely filling the shoes of the other man, he decides to remove his own insecure identity to get another one which is more steady and true.
"Me, or rather, my figure, my face, my voice, my presence in the world. The identity of an individual is enclosed in a two-letter word whose elementariness encompasses the complexity of existence. Each person exists if they can declare their existence, if they possess a name, if they recognize themselves in a personal pronoun. Hans, the main character of this metaphysical mystery thriller, is a man without a personality. Nobody recognizes him and everybody confuses him; even his name doesn’t make him stand out in the world because the person who owned it before him wore it better than he will ever be able to. Rafa Cortés
Rafa Cortés (Maiorca, Spagna, 1973) ha lavorato come aiuto regista per diversi anni, sia per il cinema, sia per la pubblicità. Ha poi esordito nella regia con due cortometraggi per il cinema (Cómo ser Federico Fernández, 2005, e La leyenda del Sevillano) e con diversi spot commerciali e videoclip. Yo, scritto in collaborazione con l’attore protagonista Alex Brendemühl, è il suo primo lungometraggio.
Rafa Cortés (Majorca, Spain, 1973) worked as an assistant director for many years, both in feature films and advertising. He then debuted as a cinema director with the two short films has directed two short films (Cómo ser Federico Fernández, 2005, and La leyenda del Sevillano, 2006), as well as several commercials and music videos. Together with the actor Alex Brendemühl, he has written Yo, his first feature film.
