Nella valle di Elah
Hank Deerfield è un reduce della guerra in Vietnam che crede nella patria e nel suo sforzo di «esportare la democrazia» nel mondo. Al suo paese ha già sacrificato un figlio, morto anni prima in una missione dell’esercito, e la moglie non l’hai mai perdonato di aver permesso che anche il loro figlio minore, Mike, partisse per l’Iraq. Quando Hank scopre che Mike, tornato dal Medio Oriente, è scomparso, decide quindi di partire per la base militare di Fort Rudd e investigare personalmente. Con l’aiuto del detective Emily Sanders scoprirà l’atroce verità sul destino del figlio e arrivando per la prima volta in vita sua a dubitare degli ideali in cui aveva sempre creduto.
"C’è una ragione per il titolo del film: è perché questi soldati partono convinti di andare a fare del bene, sentendosi dei David, e poi una volta arrivata in Medio Oriente si accorgono di essere dei Golia. Questa cosa li distrugge. Sono del parere che si tratti sempre di persone buone, alle quali, però, accade qualcosa che le distrugge dentro. Se fossero cattive in partenza non sarebbero così sconvolte dalle atrocità che vedono o che compiono. Tornano a casa distrutti e spesso se la prendono con le persone a loro vicine: il tasso di violenza domestica tra gli ex militari sta crescendo astronomicamente". (Paul Haggis)
In the Valley of Elah
Hank Deerfield is a Vietnam veteran who believes in his country and its efforts to “export democracy” throughout the world. He has already sacrificed one son for his country. His son died years before in an Army mission and his wife has never forgiven him for allowing their younger son, Mike, to leave for Iraq. When Hank learns that Mike has disappeared after his return from the Middle East, he decides to leave for Fort Rudd, an Army base, and investigate for himself. With the help of detective Emily Sanders he discovers the atrocious truth about the disappearance of his son and for the first time in his life begins to doubt the ideals he has always believed in.
"There’s a reason for the film’s title. It’s because these soldiers leave convinced that they are off to do good, feeling like a bunch of Davids, and then once they arrive in the Middle East they realize that they are actually Goliaths. This devastates them. I believe that they are always good people but something happens that destroys them inside. If they were bad right from the start they wouldn’t be so distraught by the atrocities they see or commit. They are return home destroyed and often they take it out on the people closest to them: the level of domestic violence among former soldiers is rising drastically." (Paul Haggis)

Paul Haggis
Paul Haggis (London, Ontario, Canada, 1953), laureato presso il Fanshawe College, parte per Los Angeles e nel 1975 inizia a lavorare per la televisione scrivendo episodi per varie serie, tra cui Love Boat. Negli anni 80 e 90 continua a lavorare per il piccolo schermo, collaborando come sceneggiatore, produttore e talvolta regista di serie come thirtysomething (per il quale vince anche due Emmy, per la sceneggiatura e la produzione), L.A. Law, EZ Street, e creando anche il celebre Walker Texas Ranger. Nel 1994 debutta come regista per il cinema con l’inedito Red Hot. Nel 2004 torna alla regia con Crash – Contatto fisico, che vince l’Oscar per il miglior film, e ottiene una nomination per la sceneggiatura del capolavoro di Clint Eastwood Million Dollar Baby. Per Eastwood scrive ancora Flags of Our Fathers (2006) e il soggetto di Lettere da Iwo Jima (2006). Prima di tornare alla regia nel 2007 con Nella valle di Elah, scrive la sceneggiatura di Casino Royale (2006) e del remake americano di L’ultimo bacio, The Last Kiss (2005).
Paul Haggis (London, Ontario, Canada, 1953), after graduting at the Fanshawe College, left Canada for Los Angeles, where in 1975 began working for television series as Love Boat. During 1980s and 1990s kept on working as a TV screenwriter, director and producers for series as thirtysomething (Emmy for Best screenplay and production), L.A. Law, EZ Street and Walker Texas Ranger (created in 1993). In 1994 directed his first film for cinema, Red Hot, and in 2004 Crash - Contatto fisico, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. In 2005 gained a nomination for Best screenplay of Clint Eastwood’s masterpiece Million Dollar Baby. With Eastwood he also wrote Flags of Our Fathers (2006) and the story of Lettera from Iwo Jima (2006). Before directing In the Valley of Elah in 2007, he wrote the screenplay of Casino Royale (2006) and The Last Kiss (2005).
