Million Dollar Baby
Frankie Dunn è un ex pugile diventato allenatore che gestisce una palestra di Los Angeles insieme all’amico Scrap, anch’egli un ex boxeur invecchiato. Chiuso e scorbutico, Frankie conduce un’esistenza solitaria, coltivando la passione per la lingua gaelica, frequentando la chiesa nonostante si reputi senza fede e celando il dolore per una figlia che non vede da anni. La sua vita cambia quando, dopo essere stato abbandonato dal suo migliore allievo, nella palestra si presenta Maggie, una ragazza determinata a diventare pugile che gli chiede di insegnarle il mestiere. Inizialmente Frankie fa di tutto per scoraggiare Maggie, ma poi, colpito dalla sua ostinazione, decide di aiutarla e darle tutto l’affetto e la protezione di cui è capace.
“Per la sceneggiatura dovevo prendere due bellissime storie e in qualche modo costruire attorno loro un mondo e trovare il modo di raccontarlo. Sapevo di aver bisogno di una narrazione, che è una cosa che solitamente detesto, perché trovo sia un espediente troppo facile; sapevo anche di dover introdurre qualcosa di emotivo per giustificarla. In quel periodo stavo attraversando un lungo e doloroso divorzio ed ero stato per molto tempo lontano da mia figlia. Era orribile. Così ho preso queste sensazioni e le ho messe nella storia come qualcosa che Frankie non poteva perdonare a se stesso. Ho deciso di non rivelare al pubblico di cosa si trattasse. È sempre una ragione emotiva che ti porta al cuore di una storia, non una intellettuale”. (Paul Haggis)
Million Dollar Baby
Frankie Dunn is a ex-boxer, now a trainer, who runs a boxing gym in Los Angeles together with his friend Scrap, who’s an aged ex-boxer too. Introvert and crusty, Frankie lives a lonely life, nourishing his passion for Gaelic language, attending the church, even though he has no faith, and concealing his grief for a daughter who he’s not seeing for years. After being dropped by his best fighter, his life changes when Maggie, a girl who’s determined to become a boxer, shows up at the gym and asks Frankie to teach her the job. At first he tries his best to discourage Maggie, but then, impressed by her stubbornness, he decides to help her and give her all the affection and protection he can.
“For the script of the film I had to take two beautiful short stories and somehow surround them with a world and find a way to tell it. I knew I had to have narration, but I usually hate narration, because it’s such an easy tool. I knew I had to come up with some emotional way to justify it. I had a situation when I went through a very long, painful divorce and I was estranged from my youngest daughter for some time. It was horrible. So I took those feelings I had and put them in the story as something that maybe Frankie couldn’t forgive himself for. I decided on not telling the audience what that was. It’s always an emotional reason that you get the story’s hook, never an intellectual one.” (Paul Haggis)

Clint Eastwood
Clint Eastwood (San Francisco, 1930) diventa celebre con i western di Sergio Leone e nel 1971 esordisce alla regia con Brivido nella notte. Negli anni seguenti interpreta la parte dell’ispettore Callaghan e continua a realizzare western e film di altri generi come il biografico Bird (1988), omaggio al jazzista Charlie Parker che conquista due premi a Cannes. Nel 1992 vince 4 Oscar con Gli spietati e successivamente si impone come un grande autore contemporaneo con opere come Potere assoluto (1997), Mystic River (2003) e Million Dollar Baby (2004), con cui si aggiudica il secondo Oscar per la Miglior regia e per il Miglior film.
Clint Eastwood (San Francisco, 1930) became famous acting in the western of Sergio Leone and in 1971 he debuted as a director with Play Misty For Me. Over the following years, he plays the role of Inspector Callahan, continues to realize westerns and other genre films, as the biographic Bird (1988), a tribute to the jazzman Charlie Parker, that it awarded at Cannes. In 1992 he wins 4 Oscar with Unforgiven (1992) and then made his name as a great contemporary author with works like Absolute Power (1997), Mystic River (2003) and Million Dollar Baby (2004), for which he won his second Oscar as Best Director and as Best Film.
