Fino all’ultimo respiro
Michel Poiccard, giovane malvivente, ruba un’auto nei pressi di Marsiglia e in seguito a un banale imprevisto uccide un gendarme. Messosi in fuga, raggiunge Parigi per riscuotere una somma di denaro ma anche per ritrovare Patricia, una studentessa americana che fa la gavetta vendendo l’«Herald Tribune» sui Champs Elysées per diventare giornalista. Con la polizia ormai sulle sue tracce e la sua foto pubblicata sui giornali, Michel tenta invano di convincere Patricia a scappare con lui in Italia. Lei, però, vista la sua carriera minacciata dalle pressioni degli inquirenti, prima lo denuncia e poi lo avvisa dell’imminente arresto. Ma lui, ormai indifferente alla vita, si lascerà morire sotto il piombo dell’ispettore Vital.
“Fino all’ultimo respiro appartiene per sua natura al genere di film in cui tutto è permesso. Qualsiasi cosa facessero i personaggi poteva essere integrata al film. […] Fino all’ultimo respiro è una storia, non un soggetto. Il soggetto è qualcosa di semplice e vasto che si può riassumere in venti secondi, la vendetta, il piacere… La storia la si può riassumere solo in venti minuti.” (Jean-Luc Godard)
Breathless
Michel Poiccard, a young gangster, steals a car near Marseille and kills a gendarme after a trivial incident. He makes a getaway and goes to Paris to collect a sum of money and also to find Patricia, an American student who is rising through the ranks to become a journalist by selling the “Herald Tribune” on the Champs Elysées. With the police on his tracks and his photo in all the newspapers, Michel vainly tries to convince Patricia to run away with him to Italy. But she feels that her career is threatened by pressure from the authorities; she reports him to the police and then warns him of his imminent arrest. But he no longer cares about living and lets himself be killed by Inspector Vital’s gunfire.
“Breathless, by its nature, belongs to that genre of films in which everything is allowed. Anything the characters did could be integrated into the film. (…) Breathless is a story, not a subject. A subject is something simple and vast that can be recapped in twenty seconds, vendetta, pleasure… A story can only be recapped in twenty minutes.” (Jean-Luc Godar)

Jean-Luc Godard (Parigi, 1930) è tra i protagonisti assoluti della nouvelle vague, prima come critico militante dei «Cahiers du Cinéma» negli anni ’50, poi come regista fin dall’esordio con Fino all’ultimo respiro (1960). Godard si è imposto in quasi 50 anni di carriera come uno dei più radicali e rigorosi innovatori del linguaggio cinematografico. Nel 2006 ha curato una grande mostra al Centre Pompidou di Parigi, che gli ha dedicato una retrospettiva completa.
Jean-Luc Godard (Paris, 1930), is one of the absolute protagonists of the Nouvelle Vague, first as a militant critic of “Cahiers du Cinéma” during the 1950s, then as a director, after his debut with À bout de souffle (1960). He is one of the most radical and rigorous innovators of the cinematographic language. In 2006 he curated an important exhibit at Paris’ Centre Pompidou, which dedicated a complete retrospective to his work.
