La serie è il sequel televisivo del film di Martin Scorsese Alice non abita più qui (1974). Della versione cinematografica sopravviva solo un attore, Vic Tayback, nel ruolo di Mel, il proprietario del locale dove si svolge gran parte della serie. Nel ristorante lavora Alice, cameriera trentacinquenne con un figlio adolescente, insieme alla svampita Vera e alla spregiudicata Flo. Il burbero Mel e le due colleghe portano all’esaurimento la povera Alice, ma in fondo formano la sua vera famiglia allargata; alla fine della serie Mel venderà il ristorante e Alice riuscirà a coronare il suo sogno di cantante a Nashville. La serie nacque nel 1976 e chiuse nel 1985, dopo 202 puntate, 8 Golden Globes, tra cui uno nel 1980 come Migliore Sitcom dell’Anno.

Nel primo episodio della serie, Alice, in viaggio per Hollywood per fare la cantante, è costretta a fermarsi a Phoenix a causa della rottura della sua auto. Senza soldi e con un figlio da mantenere, accetta un lavoro da cameriera al Mel’s Diner, dove conosce lo scontroso e scostante proprietario Mel, l’esuberante e pungente Flo e la svanita Vera.

This is the TV sequel of Martin Scorsese’s film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Any Longer (1974). The only actor still present from the film version is Vic Tayback, who plays Mel, the owner of the restaurant where much of the sitcom takes place. Alice, a 35-year-old waitress with an adolescent son, works in the restaurant along with dizzy Vera and bold Flo. Gruff Mel and the other two waitresses drive Alice to the edge of a nervous breakdown, but deep down they are all one big family. At the end of the series, Mel sells the restaurant and Alice’s dream of becoming a singer in Nashville comes true. The series began in 1976 and ended after 202 episodes and 8 Golden Globes, including one in 1980 as Best Sitcom of the Year.
Ep. 1
In the first episode of the series, Alice is on her way to Hollywood to become a singer when she is forced to stop in Phoenix because her car has broken down. Penniless and with a son to maintain, she agrees to work at Mel’s Diner, where she meets the irritable and feisty owner, Mel, the exuberant, sharp-tongued Flo and dizzy Vera.
