L’adolescente Malek lavora come portantino presso il check-point al confine tra l’Iran e l’Iraq. Un giorno, tra la gente che affolla la frontiera, incontra Noura, una ragazza irachena che aiuta i suoi connazionali ad attraversare il confine. Colpito dalla bellezza di Noura, Malek si offre di aiutarla in uno dei suoi traffici, ma la perde di vista dopo che questa è tornata nel suo Paese. Tempo dopo viene avvicinato da un uomo che, a nome di Noura, gli chiede di introdurre illegalmente una persona in Iran e a poco a poco viene coinvolto in pericolose attività di contrabbando. Quando Malek scopre che la polizia è sulle tracce di Noura, capisce di essere stato usato dalla ragazza e decide di entrare in Iraq per cercarla.
Un posto di confine, nel deserto, tra Iran e Iraq. Luogo di passaggio, linea di termine e di inizio. Si esce e si entra. In due direzioni. Macchine, camion, molta gente a piedi. Passano in tanti e a Malek resta in mente il volto di una ragazza. La vede più volte, desidera incontrarla e conoscerla. Malek fa un lavoro umile, fa il facchino. Ma vuole qualcosa di più, qualcosa che gli manca. Vuole voler bene a qualcuno. A Noura. E per conquistarla cerca di rendersi utile a lei. Immagini semplici per una emozionante storia di dedizione e di accecamento amoroso. Noi vorremmo credere che la storia di Malek e Noura avrà un futuro: ma, dietro le apparenze, si possono nascondere segreti e trappole. Premio per la Miglior opera prima al Festival di Teheran. bf
Among the Clouds
Malek, a young boy, works as porter at the check-point on the border between Iran and Iraq. One day, at the crowded check-point, he meets Noura, an Iraqi girl who helps her fellow-countrymen to cross the border. Her beauty strucks Malek, and he agrees to help her with one of her traffics, but when she is back in her country, he loses sight of her. After some time, a man approaches Malek, and asks him on behalf of Noura to “smuggle” a person in Iran; little by little, Malek gets involved in dangerous traffics. When Malek finds out that the police is on Noura’s trail, he realizes that the girl used him, so decides to go to Iraq to find her.
A desert border between Iran and Iraq. A busy transit place, a line of beginning and end. People come in, people go out. In both directions. Cars, trucks, lots of people walking. A crowd crosses the border, but Malek keeps in mind the face of one girl. He sees her more than once, he wants to meet her and get to know her. Malek has a humble job, he is a porter. But he wants something more, something he’s missing. He wants somebody to love. He wants to love Noura. And in order to conquer her, he offers her his help. Simple images for a touching story of devotion and romantic blinding. We would like to think that the story of Malik and Noura has a future, but appearances can hide secrets and traps. Rouhollah Hejazi
Rouhollah Hejazi (Iran, 1979), prima di esordire nel lungometraggio con Dar miane abrha, ha diretto e prodotto diversi cortometraggi. Tra questi, The Moon Faced, del 2006, è stato premiato al festival internazionale di Minsk, in Bielorussia. Dar miane abrha è stato invece premiato come Miglior opera prima al festival di Teheran del 2007.
Rouhollah Hejazi (Iran, 1979), before directing his first feature-film Dar miane abrha, directed and produced a number of short films. His short film The Moon Faced was honored at the Minsk International Film Festival in Belarus in 2006. With Dar miane abrha he then won in 2007 the Best First Feature-Film Award in Teheran Film Festival.
