Episodio 3 - Goditi la povertà
Per due anni, l’artista olandese Renzo Martens ha viaggiato in tutto il Congo filmando uomini e cose di un paese uscito dalla guerra civile: gli operatori ONU e i proprietari delle compagnie straniere, i lavoratori delle piantagioni e la loro povertà assoluta, i cadaveri dei ribelli e le convention dei diplomatici, i reporter stranieri e i bambini denutriti... Curioso e provocatorio, Martens ha notato che la povertà in Congo è sfruttata come una ricchezza e che gli unici a non beneficiarne sono i poveri stessi. Quale idea migliore, allora, per i contadini, i minatori, i morti di fame, che «godere della povertà», facendosi pagare per essere fotografati e dare lavoro a tutti i bianchi e i neri che vengono da tutto il mondo per «aiutarli»?
La zona più pericolosa della Repubblica Democratica del Congo. Esercito, milizie locali, piantagioni, sfruttamento, aiuti occidentali e presenza delle organizzazioni umanitarie. Renzo Martens è un videoartista olandese: ed è decisamente provocatorio. Arriva con la videocamera e comincia a predicare la sua convinzione che i locali possano e debbano approfittare della loro povertà. E non invece lasciare che siano gli occidentali a trarne vantaggio. Più che un documentario: uno schiaffo alle nostre convinzioni. Più che un mesto pellegrinaggio a incontrare e filmare la povertà: un atto di accusa agli aiuti dei paesi ricchi. Irritante e inquietante. Scopertamente e tragicamente sincero. Un diario di viaggio scrupoloso e senza scrupoli. bf
Episode 3 - Enjoy Poverty
Dutch artist Renzo Martens has been travelling around Congo for two years, filming men and things of this country after the civil war: UNO workers and foreign companies’ owners, plantation labourers and their absolute poverty, dead rebels and diplomacy conventions, foreign reporters and undernourished children… Curious and provocative, Martens has realized that poverty is a source of wealth in Congo, and that only the poor don’t benefit from it. As a result, for labourers, miners, half-starved people there’s no better plan than “enjoy povertà” getting paid to be photographed and giving work to black and white people from all the world that came here to “help” them.
The most dangerous area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Army soldiers, local militia, plantations, exploitation, Western aid and humanitarian organizations. Renzo Martens is a Dutch video artist – and he is definitely provocative. He shows up with his camera and starts to preach his belief that locals can and must benefit from their poverty. And don’t allow Western people to exploit it. It’s more than a documentary: it’s a slap in the face for our beliefs. More than a sad pilgrimage to meet and film poverty: a charge against rich countries’ aid. Irritating and disturbing. Openly and tragically sincere. An accurate and unscrupulous travel diary. bf

Renzo Martens
Renzo Martens (Sluiskil, Olanda, 1973) vive e lavora tra Amsterdam, Bruxelles e Kinshasa. Dopo aver studiato a Nijmegen e Gent, si è diplomato all’Accademia Gerrit Rietveld di Amsterdam e laureato all’Università Vrije di Bruxelles. Dal 1999 espone in diverse gallerie di tutto il mondo in mostre personali e collettive.
Renzo Martens (Sluiskil, Netherlands, 1973), lives and works as a multimedia artist in Amsterdam, Bruxelles and Kinshasa. After studying at Nijmegen and Gent, he graduated at Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and then at Vrije University in Bruxelles. From 1999 his works are shown in art galleries all over the world, both in personale and collectibe exhibition.
