Da nessuna parte terra promessa
Un gruppo di clandestini curdi, tra cui un padre e un figlio, viaggiano in condizioni terribili a bordo di un camion merci sperando di passare il confine verso l’Inghilterra. Un giovane dirigente francese, intanto, si reca in Ungheria per sovrintendere alla dislocazione di una fabbrica; qui, timido e incapace di comprendere la lingua, cerca di combattere la solitudine avvicinando una tossicodipendente. Contemporaneamente, una studentessa in vacanza attraversa l’Europa riprendendo con la telecamera scene di povertà e di disperazione; arrivata a Budapest, incontra una coetanea polacca che la ospita a casa sua. Quattro viaggiatori, tre storie che si sfiorano senza mai toccarsi, in un’Europa unita ma inesorabilmente divisa.
Viaggiatori che non trovano da nessuna parte la terra promessa. Spostamenti e percorsi dentro la vecchia Europa. I clandestini curdi, un manager, una ragazza. Storie di speranze: che le cose possano cambiare, che la vita prenda un’altra piega. Storie di chi è già ricco. Storie di chi guarda i poveri con una videocamera. Storie spezzate in frammenti. Come ricomporli? Quali sbocchi dare a chi cerca un cambiamento e lo cerca rischiando tutto? C’è emozione. C’è pietà, c’è un guardare silenzioso e partecipe. C’è anche qualcosa di epico: perché quello che succede sotto i nostri occhi, che spesso non vogliono vedere, ha a che fare con le battaglie di chi spinge forte per avere un posto nella storia. Nowhere Promised Land
A group of Kurdish stowaways, including a father and his son, are travelling in terrible conditions on a truck, hoping to reach England. In the meanwhile, a young French executive is going to Hungary to supervise a factory relocation. Here, being shy and unable to speak the language, he tries to fight loneliness getting in touch with a drug-addicted girl. At the same time, a schoolgirl on holiday travels around Europe filming scenes of misery and desperation; in Budapest, she meets a Polish girl of her same age who puts her up. Four travellers, three stories that come closer without never really touching each other, in a united yet inexorably divided Europe.
Travellers who can’t find the promised land. Journeys and routes in the old Europe. Kurdish stowaways, one manager, one girl. Stories of hope – that things may change, that life may take a good turn. Stories of already rich people. Stories of people watching the poor through a video camera. Stories shattered in pieces. How put them together again? Which way out for people looking for a change, risking all they have? There’s emotion. There’s mercy, there’s a silent and sympathetic glance. There’s something epic, too, because what is happening before our eyes – things that our eyes often don’t want to see at all – concerns the battles fought by people who push hard to conquer a place in history. Emmanuel Finkiel
Emmanuel Finkiel (Boulogne-Billancourt, Francia 1961) inizia come aiuto regista di Godard, Kieslowski e Tavernier, e nel 1995 esordisce con il corto Madame Jacques sur la Croisette. Nel 1999 dirige il primo lungometraggio, Voyages (1999), che partecipa a Cannes, cui segue il documentario Casting (2001). Nel 2002 l’Infinity Festiaval gli ha dedicato un omaggio.
Emmanuel Finkiel (Boulogne-Billancourt, France 1961) began as assistant-director to Godard, Kieslowski and Tavernier. In 1995 he made his first short, Madame Jacques sur la Croisette, and in 1999 his first feature-film, Voyages (1999), screened in Cannes. Followed then the documentare Casting (2001). In 2002 Infinity Festival dedicated a complete homage to his works.
