La montagna senza albero
La piccola Jin e la sorellina Bin vivono con la madre a Seul, senza un padre e con pochi soldi per andare avanti. Un giorno la madre porta le figlie fuori città e le affida a una loro zia, promettendo di tornare una volta ritrovato il padre. Mal sopportate dalla scorbutica signora e catapultate in un villaggio che non conoscono, Jin e Bin si adattano alla nuova vita solo grazie al pensiero che un giorno l’altro rivedranno la loro mamma. Ma il tempo passa e, tra giornate trascorse a lavorare, giocare e saltare la scuola, le due sorelline si abituano all’assenza della madre. Fino a quando la zia non si stanca di loro e le porta a vivere dai nonni nella campagna coreana, nonostante questi non abbiano mai voluto saperne nulla di loro.
Una storia di abbandono e di allontanamento dall’infanzia. Un film che vive degli sguardi di una macchina da presa che si avvicina ai volti e che guarda i paesaggi naturali, come a stabilire un rapporto tra i piccoli esseri umani e la natura. Prima c’è la città, Seul. Poi un villaggio con una montagnola spoglia, da dove le bambine hanno visto partire la mamma con l’autobus: ci piantano dei rami secchi, diventa la loro «treeless mountain», luogo di muta desolazione. Ma c’è anche un terzo luogo, più accogliente, una tranquilla fattoria in campagna. Film quasi autobiografico, dolceamaro, intimo, delicato, molto vicino a quella fragile e giusta dignità che hanno i bambini quando devono cavarsela da soli, confidando in un maialino-salvadanaio... bf
Treeless Mountain
Little Jin and her younger sister Bin live with their mum in Seoul, without a father and with little money to get by. One day their mother takes them out of town, and leaves them at an aunt’s home, promising to come back after finding their father. Hardly tolerated by the ill-tempered lady, and catapulted into an unknown village, Jin and Bin adapt to their new life clinging to the idea that one day their mother will be back. But time goes by and the two girls, spending their days working, playing and skipping school, get used to their mother’s absence. Until their aunt, tired of the girls, takes them to the grandparents, who live in the Korean countryside, despite the old couple never cared about Jin and Bin.
A story of neglect and separation from childhood. A movie that lives on glances by a camera that gets close to faces and watches natural landscapes, as to establish a relationship between little human beings and nature. At the beginning there’s a city, Seoul. Then a village with a bleak hill, on which some little girls have seen their mother leaving by bus: they plant dry branches, turning the hill in a “treeless mountain,” a place of silent desolation. But there is a third place, too. A cosier one, a peaceful country farm. A bitter-sweet, intimate, delicate, almost autobiographical film, sensitive to that fragile and fair dignity children display when they have to go it alone, relying on a piggy bank… bf

So Yong Kim
So Yong Kim (Pusan, Corea del Sud, 1968) è cresciuta e ha studiato a Los Angeles e ha poi studiato pittura, recitazione e video arte presso la School of the Art Institute. Nel 2006 ha esordito con In Between Days (Premio speciale della giuria al Sundance Film Festival) e ha cominciato a come produttrice e sceneggiatrice.
So Yong Kim (Pusan, South Korea, 1968) grew up and studied in Los Angeles and studied painting, performance, and video art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2006 she debuted with the feature films In Between Days (2006), which won a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. She also works as procuder and screenplayer.
