Alba tragica
Dopo aver ucciso un uomo in piena notte, l’operaio François si barrica nella propria stanza e cerca di resistere agli assalti della polizia. Intanto, con la memoria va agli eventi che lo hanno portato sino a quel punto: l’incontro con la fioraia Françoise, la relazione con Clara, l’arrivo dell’ambiguo Valentine che, già amante di Clara, seduce anche Françoise, la lite con l’uomo e infine l’omicidio. E mentre la polizia sgombera l’area di fronte il palazzo assediato, Clara soccorre Françoise, rimasta ferita nello scontro tra i due uomini. Infine, gli agenti fanno irruzione nella stanza con una bomba lacrimogena, ma François si toglie la vita prima di essere catturato. Intanto sorge l’alba di un nuovo giorno.
L’anno scorso, abbiamo aperto con Alba di gloria di John Ford (1939). Adesso, inauguriamo il festival con un altro classico che ha la parola «Alba» nel titolo. Alba tragica incarna il «realismo poetico» francese di prima della guerra. Il titolo originale è Le jour se lève, anche se il film, sempre del 1939, si chiude su un’alba che giunge a tragedia compiuta. Dialoghi di Jacques Prévert, scenografie di Alexandre Trauner, regia di Marcel Carné, interpreti Jean Gabin e Arletty, su tutti. Temi: la fatalità, la predestinazione sociale, il pessimismo profondo e il romanticismo nero, un passato cui non si può sfuggire (con quei flashback che anticipano i noir americani…). Daybreak
After killing a man in the middle of the night, François, a factory worker, locks himself in his home, and tries to resist the police assault. In the meanwhile, he starts remembering how he was led to this situation: the first meeting with Françoise, a florist, the relationship with Clara, the awkward and ambiguous Valentin, who, despite being Clara’s lover, seduces Françoise, the argument with Valentin, and finally the murder. While the police evacuates the area in front of the building, Clara helps Françoise, who has been wounded during the fight between Valentine and François. Finally, cops break into the room with a tear gas canister, but François kills himself before being arrested. Outside, the sun raises on another day.
Last year, for Alba’s opening night we chose Young Mr. Lincoln (1939) by John Ford (Italian title: Alba di gloria). This year we open the festival with another movie classic with the world “Alba” in its title. Alba tragica embodies the French pre-war “poetic realism.” The original title is Le jour se lève, but the movie ends with the sun rising when the tragedy is complete. Dialogue by Jacques Prévert, production design by Alexandre Trauner, direction by Marcel Carné, with Jean Gabin and Arletty above all the cast. Issues discussed: fate, social predestination, deep pessimism and black romanticism, a past impossible to escape (with those flashbacks that anticipate the American noir…). Marcel Carnè
Marcel Carné (Parigi, Francia, 1909 - Clamart, Hauts-de-Seine, Francia, 1996) inizia a lavorare come assistente di Jacques Feyder e nel 1936 esordisce con Jenny (1936). Grazie alla proficura collaborazione con lo scrittore Jacques Prévert, lo scenografo Alexandre Trauner, il musicista e compositore Maurice Jaubert e l’attore Jean Gabin, diventa il più famoso regista francese degli anni ’30, autore del cosiddetto «realismo poetico», con i celebri Il porto delle nebbie (1938), Hôtel du Nord (1938), Il porto delle nebbie e Alba tragica. Durante l’occupazione nazista lavora nella zona del governo di Vichy, realizzando, tra gli altri, il capolavoro Amanti perduti (1945), film dal chiaro intento anti-nazista.
Marcel Carné (Paris, France, 1909 - Clamart, Hauts-de-Seine, France, 1996) entered the movies as the assistant of Jacques Feyder. In 1936 he directed his first movie, Jenny. Colaborating with the writer Jacques Prévert, the decorator Alexandre Trauner, the musician and composer Maurice Jaubert and the actor Jean Gabin he became the great director of the pre-war era of the French cinema with the poetic realism style. Some titles are Le quai des brumes (1938), Hôtel du Nord (1938), Le jour se lève (1939). During the ocupation of France by Nazi-Germany he worked in the zone of the government of Vichy making Les Enfants du paradis (1945), a clear anti-nazi parabola.
